Imphal, February 12 2014:
Showing its utmost concern on the 'racial discrimination' against the North Easterners in New Delhi, the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM-Tombing group) has suggested certain measures to Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde to check the ugly developments in the national capital and elsewhere.
The ATSUM also requested the Union home minister for his immediate intervention.
In a memorandum submitted to the Union home minister today signed by its president Muan Tombing and general secretary Vareiyo Satshang, ATSUM said, "To ensure the safety of North East citizens in Delhi, sensitising campaign should be conducted in public platform and mass media to educate the semi-literate mainland Indians about the right of the North Eastern people for better assimilation and integration of the NE people." It also suggested the Union home minister that iconic personalities should be used as ambassador for giving message about the diverse socio-cultural ethos of India with special reference to the North East people through various media.
"Strict instruction and sensitizing class should be conducted amongst the police of the capital, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
North East Support Centre set up at NEC Guest house, Chanakyapuri in Delhi should monitor all the problems confronted by the North East people with iconic personalities who possess emotional attachment with the people from the region," ATSUM memorandum further suggested.
It then said in the wake of the 4th consecutive day of protest launched by the youth of North East people against the brutal attack that led to the death of Nido Tania and assault of two North East women and the subsequent assurance given by the prime Minister on 4th February 2014, anti-racial Act should be introduced to curb anti-social activities.
ATSUM then said unity and diversity and the composite cultural ethos of India should be infused to the students at primary and secondary school levels by introducing the history of the North East in the text books of Delhi schools from the next academic session 2014-15 .
It then demanded, "Befitting punishment should be awarded to the perpetrators according to the nature of the crime to ensure that North East people get respect and justice.
While your government is championing peaceful co-existence of various ethnic groups in the country and reminding the frequent quote 'Unity in Diversity', the ATSUM beseeches your government to kindly consider and address the grievances of the needy North Eastern people at the earliest" .
"If the aforesaid demands are ignored by your esteem government, ATSUM in collaboration with the like-minded social organisations of the North East India will be compelled to undergo intense agitation with no other resort", it warned.
