Imphal, October 01 2014:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) has strongly condemned the act of attacking the media persons while they were covering an incident at Nambol Chingmang Sabal Leikai under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district yesterday.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, President of AMWJU Wangkhemcha Shyamjai said that four media persons, namely A Jiten of Sangai Express, B Devchandra of Poknapham, S Bigyan of Naharolgi Thoudang and A Priyo of UNA went to cover the violent incident between Nambol Police and the locals of Nambol Chingmang after the media houses were informed about the incident.
However, on reaching the spot, the locals showed resentment to the media persons for coming late.
Suddenly, a man with a machete came out and chased the media persons.
Thereafter, the media persons ran for their safety towards the police team.
He further said that AMWJU would not cover news items from Nambol Maibam Lokpa Sabal Leikai for publication until the matter is settled between the union and the people of the village.
An FIR has also been filed with Nambol Police Station over the incident, and that the Home Minister would be urged to order an inquiry into it, AMWJU President added.
