Imphal, January 30 2020:
At a time when the State is reeling under the menace of drug and other intoxicating substances, the decision of the State Government to open a godown for foreign liquor is unacceptable, said Ningol Club Heirok in a statement.
Asserting that the Government must have initiated the "war against drugs" campaign after acknowledging the impact of drugs and substance abuse on society, the club urged the State Government to amend Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 too to check uncontrolled brewing of alcohol.
Why is the Government giving undivided attention to the matter relating to selling and brewing of liquors in the State, it questioned adding that opening godown to store foreign liquor in the State will be equivalent to humiliating the movement of Manipur woman's activists combating alcoholism and drug addiction since 1970.It also said that the Government proclamation that the revenue collected from liquors can improve the economy of the State is groundless.
Stating that "war on alcohol" and "war on tobacco" campaigns should also be implemented in the State, the club appealed the State Government to scrap its alleged decision to open liquor godown in the State.
