Imphal, April 24 2013:
With only a namesake security arrangements made for the huge number of trucks plying on the National Highways leading to Manipur, various unwanted incidents of killing or abducting drivers have taken place, Janata Dal (United) has charged, adding that the State government should be held responsible for all these incidents.
Addressing media persons at its office at Babupara here today, M Tombi, President of JD (U), Manipur Pradesh, stated that arranging just 6 vehicles for escort party for over 200 trucks is a ridiculous act on the part of the State Government.
For such a huge number of goods laden trucks, at least 20 vehicles for escort party would be needed.
But instead of doing the needful, the State Government has left the truck drivers to their own fare.
This is very unfortunate.
He went on to allege that the Congress Government in the State has no time to think for the welfare of truck drivers or find out ways and means to stop crimes being committed by anti-social elements along the National Highways.
The State unit JD (U) President also maintained that the rising crimes against women in Manipur can only be reduced if the culprits are given capital punishment.
It is very unfortunate that the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh-led Congress government in the State has not been able to ensure protection and security to the women in the society, he said, while informing that all these issues had been brought up for serious discussion in the National meeting of JD(U) held recently.
