Imphal, December 14 2021:
Demanding effective implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system so as to save the indigenous people of the state, Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall on Tuesday.
A team of Imphal West Police came to the protest venue and talked with JCILPS convenor BK Moirangcha.
The police, on its part, informed that Section 144 of CrPC was currently enforced in Imphal West and the DC had not given any permission for holding the sit-in protest.
As such, the police urged for wrapping up the protest at the earliest.
Shortly after 5 members of the Committee including BK Moirangcha along with the OC of Imphal West went to meet the DC.
An amicable solution was reached and the sit-in was allowed to continue.
Speaking on the sidelines, BK Moirangcha explained that the sit-in was staged as an earlier gazette notification of the state government failed to include key pointers for protection of the indigenous people of the state.
He then informed that an awareness programme cum sit-in protest will be staged on Wednesday.
The awareness will highlight the main demands such as for the state cabinet to formulate a stronger regulation for the state encompassing the same powers as Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR); clear identification of who the indigenous people are and permanent residents under the ILP guidelines; setting the base year as 1951; restricting sale of land to outsiders in the state's guideline as indicated similarly in BEFR; setting up the Population Commission at the earliest and enforcing Section 20 of ILP guideline immediately, he conveyed.
