Imphal, September 14 2015:
All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Worker Union has stated that enforcing Highway Protection Force (HPF) along the two National Highways of Imphal-Dimapur road and Imphal-Jiribam road can help control artificial price rice in the State.
The problem of artificial skyrocketed price of essential commodities can be solved immediately if the transportation along the highways becomes a 24-hour service which will be possible only when a Highway Protection Force is enforced, union president S Manglem Manglem told Hueiyen Lanpao on Monday.
Due to lack of security personnel and HPF, many drivers along the highways are often harassed and threatened and even looted, said Manglem.
He said drivers were safe when HPF was put in force along the highways a few years back.
During that time there was no report of artificial price hike in the State since the transporters regularly fetched daily essential commodities, said Manglem.
Manglem said that the current price rise in Manipur is a creation of the people indulged in monopoly taking the advantage of shortage of essential commodities in Manipur which has been further worsened by imposing illegal taxes along the highways by a few underground organizations.
