Irang Bailey Bridge inaugurated

After a gap of almost three months of its collapse, the Irang Bailey bridge re constructed over the Irang river along NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road) in between Taobam and Awangkhul Taobam villages has been formally inaugurated on Wednesday by Taobam Village Authority attorney chairman Tangamang Kamei in the presence of National Highway Infrastructure Development Cooperation Limited (NHIDCL) general manager Ashutosh Mishra and Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) president Daichuipou Gangmei, CSO leaders and villagers.
After the inauguration, light vehicles were allowed to pass through the bridge while heavy trucks would be prohibited from using the same structure for at-least a week as the RCC road surface near the abutment will take some day for solid setting.
Mention may be made that Irang Bailey bridge collapsed on May 12 and since then it cut off the second life line of the state.
Talking to this daily, Ashutosh Mishra expressed elation that commencement of vehicular moment along the route will help economic activities, enhance better connectivity and ease the bottleneck of transportation.
Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren posted a video on Facebook of light vehicles moving over the newly-constructed bridge on Wednesday.
According to NHIDCL sources, the new Bailey bridge, supplied by Kolkata based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, could withstand 40 tonnes of load.
Subsequent to collapse of the bridge located in Tamenglong district due to heavy rains, vehicles had to take a detour from Rengpang village via the old Kachar road, crossing Khoupum valley and Bishnupur district.
