Imphal, February 10 2015:
Around 80 bags of rice and other properties were destroyed in a fire that broke out at Shree Shree Govindajee temple complex under Porompat police station at around 1.30 this afternoon.
Electric short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire that started from an extended wooden room attached to the pucca building where Brahmins and Pandits of the temple were staying.
After razing the room completely, the inferno spread to another adjoining wooden room which was used as a storehouse.
Although, Manipur Fire Service personnel rushed to the temple complex on time and doused the fire before it spread to other structures, around 80 bags of rice, furniture and belongings of Brahmins and Pandits kept in these two rooms were destroyed.
A large number of police personnel led by Imphal East SP Kamei Angam Romanus, Imphal East Additional SP Manjit and Porompat police station OC Chandrakumar also came to the temple complex and helped Fire Service personnel in controlling the fire.
The fire was finally put off at around 2 pm.
According to a Brahmin, they saw smoke billowing out from the wooden room where some Brahmins and Pandits were staying at around 1.30 pm.
The room was locked from outside as all the occupants went out to attend a Shradha ceremony, he said.
