Water borne disease noticed; Chadong villagers fear spread of malaria

A kind of water borne disease has been reported from Chadong village affected by Mapithel Dam since the water level reduced in the later part of August 2015 .
According to a press release issued by Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisations (MDAVO) chairman Dominic Kashung, one Ks Henry (65) has been infected with a disease with symptoms like serious 'swelling below his naval parts' accompanied by acute pain.

The victim said that he was not exposed to the water but was infected with the unknown disease as he went out for gardening work at his old submerged residential site which surfaced after the water level receded.
Many other people of Chadong reported that those who approached the area feel severe headache due to the foul smell in the area.
Some villagers have also complained about snakes, reptiles and insects found in the local area and also the presence of mosquitoes.
They said that the presence of mosquitoes is now triple times higher this year than previous years.
MDAVO said since Mapithel is a malaria-prone area, there is high apprehension about the spread of malaria in the village area.
Meanwhile, villagers of Chadong, Ramrei, Ramrei Aze, UMC, Riha, Riha and Thoyee have condemned the sudden blocking of Thoubal river for construction of Mapithel Dam and alleged that they have already lost crores of rupees as crops have submerged and damaged by the overflowed water.
Approximately 350-400 ha of paddy fields and homestead farms of 6-7 villages have been damaged.
Besides this, thousands of flora and fauna covering about 44 sq km of forest (6 sq km of Thoyee, 17 sq km of Riha, 10 of Ramrei, 11 sq km of Chadong have been destroyed in the last part of July and 2nd week of August 2015, said MDVO.
