IO of ** rape case deposed before court

Imphal, January 07 2013:
The Investigating Officer (IO) of the **** gang-rape case faced the Court of Sessions Judge, Imphal West on Monday during which his statement was recorded by the court.
The court recorded the statement of Assistant Sub-Inspector, Premkumar, the IO of the gang-rape case of chili trader, Zangthailiu, while three out of the four accused in the case were also produced before the court.
The victim *** threw shoes at the accused just as they arrive in the court complex in the afternoon.
She also tried to thrash them, resulting in a minor scuffle between the Joint Action Committee seeking justice in the case and the police.
However, the police managed to control the standoff.
Additional Superintendant of Police, Central Jail, Sajiwa, was also appeared before the court with regard to the bail plea of accused Laikhuram Rojit Singh.
Notably, the same Court had rejected the bail plea on January 3 citing the gravity and nature of the offence against the accused Rojit Singh and also the stage of the trial of the accused.
Petitioner Laikhuram Ongbi Sanahanbi Devi, wife of accused Rojit Singh, had sought the bail on behalf of her husband citing his health ground.
In the court, the Medical Officer, Central Jail, Sajiwa had also stated that Rojit Singh was suffering from prolapsed inter vertebrae disc (PIVD) and that he had been referred to the JN Hospital, Porompat here for necessary treatment.
The Court had directed the Superintendent, Manipur Central Jail, Shajiwa to appear before this Court on January 7 to explain the above allegations made before this Court.
So far, the court has recorded statements of eight people in the case.
The next hearing of the case has been scheduled on January 16 for which medical experts have also been directed to appear before it.
**** , 42, a housewife from Khupan Lungli village of Tamenglong district was allegedly gang-raped by four persons including two IRB personnel on the intervening night of March 21 and 22 near Kakyai Primary School in Irom Meijrao.
