Imphal, August 03 2021:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) vice president Dr S Ibomcha has urged chief minister N Biren, Singh to resolve the pending issues of Manipur with Myanmar and take up necessary steps for resolving border issues with other north eastern states.
In a statement, Dr Ibomcha said the border issues of Manipur with Myanmar after the former merged with India in 1949 and subsequent unresolved territorial issues with Nagaland for over 70 years, coupled with the "hesitancy" on part of the Congress and consecutive BJP government, smacks of possible neocolonialism governance.
"Both the Congress and BJP governments have been unable to properly settle the border issues in the north-eastern states, which in turn, has resulted to prolonged discord among the various communities of the states, who have been living cordially with one another since time immemorial", it added.
The statement continued: "During the Con gress rule, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh broke off from Assam under the Extension of Article no 371 (A) while the incumbent BJP government is now eyeing the creation of a separate "Bodoland" state.
The most recent examples of lack of apathy of the central government towards resolving the border issues in the northeast region was the killing of 6 security personnel in Assam by Mizoram forces along with causing injuries to others.
The ruling BJP government needs to take the responsibility in this regard" .
"In 1953, the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru handed over Manipur's Kabow Valley to Myanmar.
Border Pillar no.81 was dismantled and reinstalled 3km into Manipur's territory, which has continued to be a sore spot for the people.
In 1964, the Congress government yielded to the demand of Naga insurgents, leading to the formation of Nagaland and imposition of cease fire in the then Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Senapati sub-divisions of Manipur", the statement said.
It maintained that "In 1972, the then MPP government announced general amnesty, thereby ushering in peace to the state.
Then PM AB Vajpayee in 1995 and PM Modi in 2014, signed the framework agreement with NSCN-IM under Article No 361 (A), that triggered borders issues between Manipur and Nagaland.
During the process, Nagaland Government also landed its hand on Manipur's Dzuko valley and Jessami areas, due to the "irresponsibility" of the BJP government.
Thus, the government should do all that is necessary for resolving all pending border issues of the state as soon as possible" .
