Seminar on medicinal plants begins

A three-day State level seminar/workshop on 'Cultivation and Conservation of Medicinal Plants in Manipur' has commenced from today at Lamlong Higher Secondary School, Imphal East.
The seminar, cum workshop being organised by United Meetei Mayel Academy, Imphal with the support of RVPSP, DST, New Delhi was inaugurated with H Birkumar Singh, Principal Scientist, CSIR: North East Institute of Science and Technology, Lamphelpat and S Thoiba Singh, Deputy Inspector of Schools (Zone-II) as the chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, H Birkumar informed that through 36 institutions and about 100 offices, Council of Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) has been taking up various projects for development and promotion of medicinal plants throughout the country.
Pointing out that medicinal plants grow abundantly in Manipur for which careful nurturing has become inevitable, he called upon the subject experts as well as the general populace to contribute in the development medicinal plants in the State.
As a guest of honour of the event's inaugural session, CMO, NCYRH, Porompat's Dr Ksh Kala Singh strongly advocated inclusion of certain amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in the daily menu for such diets act as not only natural food supplement but also prevent various ailments.
He also emphasized on scientific and extensive plantation of medicinal plants in Manipur so as to contribution to the State's economy.
Lamlong Higher Secondary School Principal N Rameshwari Devi was the other guest of honour.
While Dr Ksh Kala also deliberated on 'Need for conservation of medicinal plants for Health', S Thoiba Singh spoke on 'Relevance of medicinal plants in Manipur' on the first day of the seminar.
