Hill leaders give safeguard territory call

Leaders of different hill organisations like Indigenous Minorities Socio-Cultural Organisation, Manipur (IMSCOM), Indigenous Minorities Organisation Manipur (IMOM) and Hao-mee Research Guild (HRG) have appealed to all the indigenous people of Manipur to protect the state's territorial integrity and live together in love and harmony.
IMSCOM president Momsokam Bapui, IMOM president Rengenson Thanga and HRG chairman Robin Shinglai made this appeal during the 22nd foundation anniversary celebration of Manipur Peace and Integrity Council (MAPI-Council) held at Manipur Press Club here on Friday.
All the hill leaders along with MAPI-Council president KC Romeo, UPF president N Rupachandra and CADA president Hijam Priyokumar were presidium members of the event.
Addressing the gathering, IMOM president Rengenson Thanga said that women took active role in all the issues concerning people of the state including atrocities committed by security forces under the guise of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the historic nude protest staged by women in front of western gate of Kangla in 2004 against AFSPA will remain etched in the history of Manipur.
While lauding that role played by MAPI Council in maintaining harmony among people of hills and valley, Rengenson said that MAPI Council has been reaching out to far flung hill areas during the time of emergency and the organisation is expected to continue the same in future.
In his speech at the event, Momsokam Bapui said that Manipur is inhabited by different communities and hence there is the need for love and understanding among these communities to foster unity and strength.
He also lauded MAPI Council's initiative of helping the poor people of the hills by launching 'See the place meet the people' and assured that IM SCOM will support the campaign at its level best as such initiative will help in strengthening good relation between hills and valley people.
HRG chairman Robin Shinglai also said that entire people of the state want to live together in peace and understanding and effort be ing made by MAPI Council in this regard is encouraging.
In his speech, UPF president N Rupachandra said that every community settling in Manipur needs to work together with a common agenda for a good future of the land and community-based thoughts need to be discarded.
Altogether 11 women leaders who shouldered their responsibility in different issues concerning the state were also honoured on the occasion by presenting simple gifts.
