Legal awareness programme for girl students

Imphal, September 30 2015:
District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East in collaboration with Tribal Youth Council, Manipur (TYCM) organized a day-long legal awareness programme under the sponsorship of Manipur State Legal Authority Manipur to create awareness among the girl Students about the importance of women reservation in local governance and their legal provisions at Adimjati Shiksha Ashram, Chingmeirong on Wednesday.
Around 60 girl hostellers of Adimjati who are studying in different institutions at Imphal along with some law students, mostly girls from LMS Law College, Imphal numbering about 100 participants attended the programme.
AC Raising, a social activist who is also a Convenor of TYCM along with members also attended the programme.
Resource person R Daniel, an advocate who spoke on the topic 'Importance of Women Reservation on Local Governance' informed to the participants that seats are to be reserved for Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their population.
Out of the reserved seats, not less than 1/3rd of it shall be reserved in Zila Parishad for women, and seats are also to be made in favour of Scheduled Tribes in every municipality.
Out of the total number of seats to be filled by direct elections, at least 1/3rd would be reserved for women.
However, there are no provisions for reservation of seats in the Autonomous District Council (in Hill Areas) Act, 1971 for women.
The resource persons earnestly shared to the participants that there shall be reservation of seats in the said local governance for women.
Another resource person, Dr Tara Manchin Hangzo, also a social activist spoke on the legal provisions shared various women friendly laws.
She spoke on different international and national provisions, Acts and Conventions related to protection of right of women and children including Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, Convention on the Political Rights of Women, 1952 and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 .
Thongam Thoibi Kasar joined the programme as a recording secretary and Ks Aaron, a student was the moderator.
They shared on the importance of holding legal awareness programmes.
