Imphal, November 24 2014:
The proscribed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) has expressed serious concern over rising crime and violence against women in Manipur.
According to a press statement issued by PREPAK's Assistant Secretary of Publicity and Propaganda Leibakngakpa Luwang in connection with the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women", Manipur has seen rapid increase in crime and violence against women in the last few years.
As many as 40 women have been raped and 61 women were killed this year till November 10 .
The victims of such heinous crimes also included many minor girls who are below 18 years.
Around 287 cases of crime and violence against women in the State have been reported this year by the media.
This figure has rapidly increased during the last few years.
There were only 78 cases in 2010, 166 in 2011, 304 in 2012 and 285 cases in 2013 .
The condition of women in India is very pathetic.
The Indian social system does not have much regard for the weaker sections and so the women are always in a miserable state.
The rate of crime and violence against women in India is very alarming.
Despite being a signatory of United Nations' Convention of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and having its own legislation of "Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005", India cannot do much to safeguard women in the country, it said.
According to a report of NCRB, 24206 rape cases were registered in 2011, but the culprits were sentenced only in 5632 cases.
The Indian authorities have totally neglected the directive of the Supreme Court for disposal of all rape cases within two months.
Owing to such loopholes, crime and violence against women are rapidly increasing in India, the statement mentioned.
Further, the PREPAK appealed to all to stand united to safeguard women and end violence in Manipur.
