State becomes home of second hand vehicles: MLA Dr I Ibohalbi

With the Transport Department failing to check entry of outdated vehicles from other States, Manipur has now filled with second hand vehicles and alarming smoke emission from these outdated vehicles, MLA Dr I Ibohalbi has observed.
Taking part in the discussion of demands in the State Assembly session today, MLA Ibohalbi said that the failure on part of the Transport Department has apparently led to rampant entry of second hand vehicles from outside the State which has contributed to alarming smoke emission and pointed out that the department awarded registration numbers to such vehicles without conducting proper test.
Responding to the query raised, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar said that the government is implement a transport policy in the State and for this, several officials have been sent already to other States to study about the implementation of such policy.
He also informed that the Imphal-Mandalay bus service will be started once the memorandum of understanding is signed between the State and neighboring country.
Maintaining that efforts are on to install traffic signal lights in the city under the funding of MAHUD, the Minister said that the LED based traffic lights have been already installed at traffic junctions by a private Sun Technology which was entrusted with the work.
The yearly maintenance cost for each traffic junction will be around Rs 50000, he added.
The Minister further said that the government has been trying to hand over service of JnNURM buses to private transporters and assured that hire charges will be collected from contractors for hiring machineries of Works Department on regular basis.
After much deliberation, the House unanimously passed sanction amounts for certain demands including Demand no 6 � Transport (Rs 7, 11, 52, 000), Demand no 8 � PWD (Rs 315, 78, 72, 000), Demand no 21 � Industries (Rs 79, 80, 16, 000), Demand no 28 � Excise (Rs 19, 18, 14, 000), Demand no 29 � Sale Tax (Rs 4, 67, 07, 000) and Demand no � Planning (Rs 1181, 16, 25, 000) .
