Imphal, September 18 2022:
Denouncing India's annexation of Manipur through the 'Manipur Merger Agreement' signed on September 21, 1949, the proscribed National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) has imposed a 24-hour bandh on September 21 .
The bandh, however, will not cover movement relating to medical, electricity and water supply and media, NRFM information & publicity department informed in a statement.
While calling upon people of Manipur to question collectively on Government of India if the merger agreement does not have clause for regaining Manipur's sovereign status, NRFM said that the Government of India should give answer to this question.
According to the NRFM statement, the heaviest defeat for the people of Manipur was suffered on September 21, 1949 as it was on this day that their freedom was suppressed and became slaves of India.
Manipur existed as an independent nation in South East Asia but came under British colonial power after the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891.Even though Manipur regained sovereign status after the British left on August 14, 1947, India annexed Manipur after the then king Bodhchandra was forced to sign on the pre-meditated merger agreement on September 21, 1949 at Shillong and since then India snatched away freedom of the people of the land.
India preplanned everything to secure a written statement to merge Manipur but did hot make the people of Manipur aware of details of the treaty or accept it, the outfit questioned.
Further questioning if the treaty was signed after collective understanding of the representatives of governments India and Manipur, the NRFM statement said that Government of India must give answer to the condition Manipur was in prior to signing the merger agreement at Shillong.
It also said that a treaty/agreement can be retracted or invalidated if one of the signing parties happens to be unsatisfied with the agreed points.
