Blanket ban imposed on hunting Amur Falcon

Imphal, October 30 2022:
Tamenglong and Senapati district administrations have banned hunting, catching, killing or selling of Amur Falcon, locally known as Akhuaipuina, keeping in view of the arrival of the migratory bird.
The district magistrates issued orders enforcing the ban with immediate effect while stating that hunting, killing and destruction of wildlife such as Amur Falcon for food, possession or otherwise is punishable under section 50 and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.The order of Tamenglong DM informed that the migratory bird usually arrive in many parts of NE India including Tamenglong district from second week of October and is likely to roost till the end of November.
As this period is considered crucial in the life cycle of Amur Falcons, the DM hereby orders ban on all the air guns in the district and that they should be deposited with the respective Village Authorities offices, the order stated.
It further instructed the VAs of Chiuluan, Khangchiuluan, Duigailong, Tamenglong Khunjao, Tamenglong town, Bamgaijang, Taijijang, Zeiladjang, Azuram, Thiulon, Vanchengphai, Akhui, Sangrungpang, Tabanglong, Kelkao, Sempang, Duiluan, Matung, Puching, Phallong, Sonram, Dailong, Lenglong, Konphung, Dikiuram, Katang, Nheng, Ndal, Maruangpa and Namtiram villages to keep the air guns deposited in their custody until the last flock leaves their roosting place or till November 30.The order also instructed the VAs to submit report on collection of air guns to the DM's office by October 25 and added that anyone found wilfully violating the prohibitory order is liable to face the consequences as per the law.
On the other hand, the order issued by district magistrate of Senapati informed that the migratory birds have been sighted in some parts of Senapati district since the beginning of October.
It instructed Village Authorities of Uyai, Phuba, Maiba, Saranamai, Tunggam, Phaibung, Lakhamai, Thonglang, Karong, TNK Senapati, Makhel, Tobumai and Kaibi to strictly monitor the implementation of the order.
In case of any reports of violation, the SDO concerned shall take up appropriate action in accordance with the existing law and in consultation with the DFO, Senapati, it added.
The order also instructed the general public not to resort to wildlife crime and added that anyone violating the order will be liable to be prosecuted under the legal provision of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 .
