State observes Martyrs' Day

Manipur joined the nation in observing Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day on Sunday on the occasion of 74th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation.
On this day, India pays homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to secure freedom for India from the oppressive British regime.
Governor La Ganesan led the people in paying homage by laying wreath to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Memorial Hall here.
Chief minister N Biren Singh, deputy chief minister Y Joykumar Singh, Education minister S Rajen Singh, MIA N Indrajit Singh, chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, DGP P Doungel and top civil and police officials also laid wreath to the statue.
A two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed freedom fighters.
Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan "Raghubati Raghav Raja Ram" was also sung on the occasion.
BJP Manipur Pradesh also observed Martyrs' Day to commemorate the 78th Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, at Thambal Shanglen of the party at Nityaipat Chuthek on Sunday.
As part of the observance, CM N Biren and party president A Sharda Devi led the others including ex-presidents Ksh Bhabananda and Th Chaoba, in offering floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Biren remarked that Martyrs' Day marks the saddest day in the country as it reminds us of the loss of one of the country's tallest leaders, Mahatma Gandhi, who defeated the British with his non-violence movement.
He then urged the present generation to adopt Gandhi's teachings of non-violence and live harmoniously without any difference of opinions.
Regarding MGNREGS, the CM remarked that Manipur does not have any resources and as such, often faces financial constraints after payment of salaries, pension and other important transactions, despite receiving funds from the centre.
As RBI has imposed a restriction, he urged MGNREGS card holders to understand the difficulties of the state government, while adding that the difficulties are only temporary.
In her speech, party president A Sharda Devi stressed the need for respecting and following non-violent teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
As part of the observance, the gathering observed a 2-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul of Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters.
As a tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during India's freedom movement, siren was played out from the Manipur Museum from 10.59 am to 11 am to commence the tribute event followed by another round of siren from 11.02am to 11.03 to mark closure of the observance.
