Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar.
A lawyer by profession, Gandhi led the struggle for India's independence from British rule by following the path of non-violence.
Ironically, Gandhi was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse, at a prayer meeting in Delhi on January 30, 1948, less than a year after India became independent.
Gandhi is venerated throughout India as the 'father of the nation'.
His statues can be found across the country and nearly every town has at least one street named after him.
India observes Gandhi's death anniversary as Martyrs' Day in the memory of its freedom fighters.
Martyrs' Day was also observed by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhavan, located next to GM Hall today, along with offering floral tributes the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, other Council of Ministers, MLAs and party officials were present at the occasion.
Meanwhile, the observance of Martyrs' Day at GM Hall as well as at the nearby Congress Bhavan caused traffic woes in Imphal City today as the main road passing through the GM Hall was kept blocked till the end of the functions as part of stringent security measure taken up for the VVIPs.
Even pedestrians were not allowed to pass through the GM Hall Road.
