Imphal, June 28 2022:
While reiterating the government's assurance of providing fertilizers to genuine farmers, agriculture minister Thongam Biswajit Singh has said that agriculture department is opening its door widely for political parties, farmers and individuals to check urea stock and distribution details.
In a telephonic conservation on Tuesday, Biswajit told The People's Chronicle that the BJP government led by chief minister N Biren created history by holding first ever farmers' meet cum interaction programme at the state level for welfare of the farmers.
On the day of the event, an assurance was given that there will not be any issue on fertilizers in the state and genuine farmers will be provided fertilizers as per their needs, Biswajit recalled, while adding that he sticks to his and government's principle and farmers need not worry about fertilizers.
According to Th Biswajit, Monsoon arrived a bit early in the state this year and accordingly farmers sowed paddy seeds early and demanded fertilizers particularly urea in June month though application of fertilizer is normally done in July-August months.
Nevertheless, government managed to provide urea to farmers due to prior requisition of stock and around 1.46 lakh urea bags are still in the department's warehouses, he said, adding that requisition of urea from outside is still continuing and there is nothing to worry about fertiliser and its possible shortage.
On the accusation levelled against the government and the department concerned on urea fertilizer, Biswajit said that it was very unfortunate for political parties to mislead innocent farmers by feeding wrong information through the media without understanding activities of the government and the department.
He then appealed to political parties not to make such irresponsible statement in the media anymore and invited political parties, farmers and individuals to check urea stock and details of distribution from the department.
Regarding seizure of three trucks loaded with fertilizers including urea in Churachandpur district some days back, the agriculture minister clarified that the seized fertilizers were unrelated with fertilizers brought from outside by the government and anybody can check the seized fertilizers.
He also said that the government and the department are sticking to the commitment of providing urea to farmers irrespective of possessing land document or not.
He then appealed to farmers to procure urea by contacting district agriculture officers and head office of the department.
