NWU condemns assault on four Tangkhul girls by mob

The Naga Women's Union (NWU) has strongly condemned the attack and harassment of four Tangkhul girls on their way to the airport on May 24 .
In a press statement issued today, the NWU condemned the incident which occurred at Kwakeithel Bazar near Asian Hospital, Imphal, where four Tangkhul girls hailing from Namrei Village under Ukhrul district, Manipur were assaulted by a mob consisting of both men and women.
The girls were on their way to the airport to travel to Mumbai.
They were reportedly halted and forcibly dragged down from the vehicle by their hairs, their luggage were destroyed, their clothes including undergarments were ripped, the statement said.
The Union said that the girls were assaulted even after identifying themselves as Tangkhuls.
Further, they were insulted with harsh words and slurs, it added.
They were also threatened by armed personnel with loaded guns.
The girls were traumatized physically and mentally and were treated at Health Care Diagnostic Centre, Mumbai, NWU said.
Decrying the attack on women, NWU expressed disappointment that the State is "ruled by mobs and women are unsafe even in broad daylight" .
Further, NWU expressed dismay at the alleged irresponsible handling of the situation by AK Jhalajit Singh, in-charge of Central Control Room, 1st MR Imphal for reportedly claiming the incident was "false and fake" initially.
NWU urged the concerned authority to prioritize the incident and bring justice to the victims of assault.
