Imphal, January 25 2009:
LIKE THE previous year, there is apprehension failure of winter crops cultivation in the state among the farmers as well as officers of the state agriculture department as no rainfall occurred in the last two months.
With the apprehension in minds, experts of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has started giving awareness to the farmers of the Model Seed Villages on spraying micro nutrient busters so that they could save the winter crops like the pea and mustard from total failure.
According to the deputy director (soil chemist), Ph Rajendro, the non-arrival of the rain in this winter season may greatly affected to the targeted production in the model seed villages where pea and mustards are commonly cultivated.
He said pea is cultivating in around 300 hectares of field in model villages across the four valley district with the production target of 24,000 kgs of pea.
But, the target could not be achieved as in the present dry weather condition with no rainfall.
Unfortunately, even though most of the fields are located nearby the river which still have plenty of water, due to no irrigation facilities, the fields could not be watered effectively.
Farmers are not happy with the prevailing situation.
The IPM team led by deputy director (soil chemist), Ph Rajendro and accompanied by associate professor, A Herojit of the Central Agricultural University, CAU, Iroishemba and staffs of the agriculture office (Chemistry) inspected the model villages at Lilong Arapti in Thoubal district and Haorang Keirang in Imphal west today were pea and mustard are cultivating under the IPM method of farming.
At Lilong Arapti the IPM team supplied micro nutrients liquid which is to be mixed with water and spray to the plants so that the shortage water could be supplement to some extends to the plant.
