Imphal, May 24 2022:
Shiv Sena Manipur Unit president M Tombi has stated that the party would be urging union Highway and Surface minister Nitin Gadkari to upgrade the Tongjei Maril sector of Old Cachar Road to the status of a national highway.
Addressing a press meet at Shiv Sena Office, Babupara here on Tuesday, Tombi said that the Tongjei Maril road is not only harrow but also difficult to commute through.
As such, a memorandum will be submitted to the Union minister Nitin Gadkari to include the road stretch under the national highway project.
Recounting the visit of a 15-member MP team to the state on May 13 regarding urban area development projects including ring road, drainage and market development; Tombi informed that a memorandum was submitted to the PM and the union home minister through the chairman of parliament standing committee.
"The memorandum stated that with the repeal of AFSPA from some parts of the state, CM Biren said that this was a sign of improved law and order situation in Manipur, which the people agree to.
Fake encounter cases have gone down considerably.
As such, the memorandum urged for complete removal of the Act from the state", he conveyed.
Tombi continued: "Around 90 percent of Manipur is hilly areas.
If Manipur were to be declared as a hill state, it would lead to uniform law and order in both the hills and the valley.
Thus, the MLR Act should be made uniform.
In addition, the party has been demanding setting up of a national Highway Protection Force, which could aid in stopping illegal taxation and activities along the highways.
"Meanwhile, the frequent landslides along the high ways could be attributed to 16-wheeled vehicles carrying goods.
Thus, a memorandum to include the Tongjei Maril under the national highway system will be submitted to union minister Nitin Gadkari as soon as possible", he added.
Tombi then urged for formulation of a long-term policy for afforestation of hills which have been cleared of forests, to achieve Green Mission's objective.
Shiv Sena had previously launched 'Go Green Manipur' campaign last year.
It will also support BJP's campaign for a green Manipur, he conveyed.
On the other hand, several people joined Shiv Sena Manipur Unit on Tuesday.
They included Irom Ibohanbi of Thoubal Leishangthem, Huirem Joykumar of Kakching Irengband, Konthoujam Indramani Meitei, Oinam Binodkumar, Konthoujam Manishwar Singh and Laishram Samananda.
Sapam Umakanta has been appointed as Youth joint secretary, while Oinam Binodkumar has been appointed as district president and Konthoujam Indrakumar as secretary.
