Thoubal, December 20 2017:
District Committee Thoubal, under the aegis of Co ordinating Body Schedule Tribe Demand Committee Manipur , conducted a meeting regarding the inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe list, at Charangpat, Thoubal today.
The meeting was attended by social worker K Jadumani, Chanrangpat Pradhan S Imo and Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) working president Naodalen Khomba as presidium members .
Coordinating body, STDCM convenor Mutum Churamani, Kanglei Salai Apunba Lup president Y Mirenkhomba and other executive members of various organisations attended the meeting as resource persons .
Speaking on the occasion, District Committee Thoubal general secretary, Mutum (o) Nirmala noted that the population of Meetei/Meitei community in the State is gradually decreasing and there is high possibility of Meitei becoming a minority community in their own State .
She added that the people of Kakching, after enlisting under Scheduled Caste list, have been able to benefit from almost every opportunities and there is progress and development in the district as well .
The idea that the status of Meitei will decrease if they are included in the ST list, is wrong, she asserted while adding that the meeting was organised to thoroughly discuss the matter .
The resource persons opined that, considering the early times when all the people residing in the State were considered as one tribe during the implementation of foreigner permit system and the recent alarming influx of non-locals, the inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list is necessary, important and is the critical need of the hour.
