Man arrested with 10 kg gold jailed

The court of CJM Imphal West on Friday sent a man, who was arrested by Custom Divisions Imphal (Anti-Smuggling Unit) with 61 gold biscuits on Thursday, to jail.
The arrested man has been identified as Huidrom Mani (21) s/o Roneshwar of Elangkhanpokpi Mayai Leikai.
According to a press communique issued by Custom Divisions Imphal (Anti-Smuggling Unit) superintendent Th Nilakanta Singh, on receiving a report around 4pm Thursday of an Eeco Van being used to smuggle gold and that the said vehicle would be arriving at Sekmai bazar between 4.45 pm and 5.15 pm, a team was dispatched to Sekmai Bazar to intercept the vehicle.
At about 5 pm, the team halted an Eeco Van (AS01 ES 1738) and interrogated the driver.
The driver along with other three occupants of the van was then taken to the Customs office at Sangakpam, wherein the vehicle was thoroughly checked.
During the checking, 61 gold biscuits were found taped with a red colour adhesive tape in the cylindrical pipe, acting as support under the dashboard.
The 61 gold biscuits weighed 10.126 kg in total and is estimated to be worth around Rs 5,20,88,144.A case has been registered by the Anti-Smuggling Unit in this regard and the driver, identified as Huidrom Mani arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act, 1962.The other three occupants were found to be mere passengers.
Mani was produced before the court of CJM Imphal West on Friday, which then sent him to jail.
