A renowned historian from Northeast India Prof.Lal Dena spoke on the experiences of North East Indians and their integration with 'mainstream' Indians Monday at the University of Pune during a seminar organised by the University's Dept.
of Sociology and Euroculture Program Seminar Series.
In his paper "Strangers in their own Land: The Experiences of North Easterners in major Indian metropolitan cities", Prof.Lal Dena of Manipur University talked on the integration of the NE people with mainstream Indians and the contradictions (culture, religions, day-to-day lifestyles, history, etc) that is deeply rooted both in pre-colonial and colonial society where the wave of Indian nationalism never crossed over the Brahmaputra border.
According to Prof.Lal Dena, there are two types of nationalities consolidated nationalities (mainland India society) and the marginalised society (NE society), whom he referred to as the "Fourth World" people.
Prof.Lal Dena said that the NE people are 'parasite economically' as they depend up on the metropole and tends to develop a colonial ideology (internally) which subsequently affected their mental state of these peripheral tribes.
Prof.Lal Dena is former HOD, Dept.
of History, Manipur University & Fellow Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) .
