15th Fish Farmers' Day observed, prizes given to farmers

The 15th Fish Farmers' Day, 2015 was observed at Directorate of Fisheries, Lamphelpat.
Fisheries Commissioner Norbert Disinang who attended the function as chief guest said that out of 56,461 hectare of land available in the State for fishery, only 19,700 hectares has so far been utilized.
Manipur requires a total of 40,000 metric tons of fish annually and therefore the State has been continuously importing 9500 metric tons of fish to meet the consumption rate, said Norbert Disinang while adding that the fishing profession needs to be developed to increase the production.
Norbert Disinang further said that necessary help from outside farms and departments can be taken to meet the fish demand in the State.

Developing work culture, knowledge of fisheries and availability of new technologies are needed to increase te fish production level in the State, he said and added every possible effort will be made from the department to fill up the requirements.
Norbert Disinang also expressed the need for increasing the amount of money given to position holders in the fish mela.
During the observation, cash prizes and certificates were also distributed to the position holders of Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition 2014 .
Ningthoujam Kumar of Thanga Chingmei was awarded with the first prize of Rs 60,000 and a certificate for producing 15,640 kg of fish.
The second prize of Rs 40,000 and a certificate was awarded to Salam Dhaballo of Nongmaikhong for producing 6000 kg of fish while Kh Binoykumar of Mayang Imphal bagged the third prize of Rs 30,000 and a certificate for producing 4900 kg of fish.
