Imphal, September 09 2020:
The Hmar Students' Association has expressed shock at the way the Jiribam police seized bamboo from Chhotobekra Hmar village under section 52 of the Indian Forest Act 1927 on September 5, 2020 .
A press release issued by the students' association claimed that the place from where the bamboo was seized is not a forest area at all.
The Hmar tribal people of the area have been living in that area for over a century under chiefs and have enjoyed all tribal privileges and rights.
It also said that bamboo is an item of minor forest product and is exempted from permit and levy of royalty.
