Kakching, March 06 2022:
A sit-in protest was staged in front of Chandel Christian village community hall on Sunday demanding re-poll in 52 polling stations out of 80 under Chandel assembly constituency or exclusion of these polling stations from vote count over alleged proxy voting by BJP workers with support of UGs on Saturday.
The protestors comprising women only held placards denouncing proxy voting, violence against polling agents and demanding re-polling, declaring as null and void votes cast in these polling stations.
Speaking to the media, one Pashel Tonila condemned the rampant proxy voting by BJP workers in collaboration with underground elements.
Occurrence of such incident in a democratic country is very unfortunate, she decried.
Pashel appealed to the district election officer and chief electoral officer Manipur to look into the matter as soon as possible and order re-poll in the said polling stations so that rightful voters can cast their vote or do not include the totes from polling stations where proxy voting took place from counting of votes for Chandel AC.
If the authority concerned does not consider their'demands, then they will impose shutdown and launch other democratic forms of agitation, she further cautioned.
Meanwhile, addressing a press meet at Chandel on Sunday, NPF 41-Chandel Area Unit Women president Wanlum Holirest censured the BJP for working with SoO signatory UGs so as to indulge in proxy voting and stealing the rights of voters.
This is very regrettable in a democratic country like us, she said.
The attack on NPF candidate from Chandel AC Langhu Paulhring Anal and NPF advisors while they were visiting polling stations of the AC by BJP workers was suppression of human rights, she stated.
Wanlum farther demanded that the Election Commission of India, chief electoral officer Manipur and district election officer Chandel closely scrutinise the incident and conduct re-poll at the earliest in the 52 polling stations.
