Imphal, May 05 2022:
Road connectivity holds key importance in the development of a state.
However, the people of Manipur are wondering today how much effort the present government has made for improving the network and quality of roads in the state, especially in the light of its promises of bringing huge changes in the state.
Majority of the roads in and around Imphal are in poor condition.
The roads in around 27 wards under Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) were found to be in deplorable state, particularly the major ones in Imphal East district.
The existing condition of Imphal-Yairipok road, which is also part of the state high way, was found to be especially worrisome.
The portion from the Palace Gate crossing heading towards Wangkhei till Ngariyan Chingkong is full of potholes.
There are areas stretching up to 10-15 feet where the road is broken apart.
The road from Palace Gate crossing till Kongba Thongkhong (bridge) falls under the jurisdiction of both Wangkhei AC and Yaiskul AC.
The 2-3 km stretch of road located between the two constituencies and covered by IMC is not in tune with the changing time and it needs to be upgraded to a double-lane in commensurate with the increasing human population and vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, the stretch of Ayangpalli road from Khurai Lamlong to Kongba is not only falling apart but is full of potholes.
The road from Porompat traffic point leading to the office of Imphal East DC and Porompat Water Supply Scheme is also in a pitiful condition whereas the road from Ahongei crossing leading to Babina and JNIMS is not only breaking apart and filled with potholes, but also lacks proper drainage system.
This, in turn, causes the area to get inundated, thereby causing inconveniences in transportation of patients.
According to the people living in these areas, the stretch of the road from the heart of Imphal till Kongba bridge is around 4km.The government dreams of setting up a smart city every now and then.
But it is embarrassing to see the condition of the road stretch from Palace Gate crossing till Kongba which falls under IMC.
It is unfortunate that the government is unable to maintain the roads even within 4-5km of Imphal City.
On top of this, the Imphal East DC road, as well as the roads from Minuthong to JNIMS and Remedy Hospital near Palace Gate till Tribal market area in New Checkon are in such poor conditions that there have been many instances of road accidents, some of which were fatal.
It is also disheartening to see the government and the authority concerned ignoring the deplorable condition of the roads leading to Babina and JNIMS.
Thus, the people wished for the government and the authorities concerned to repair the roads at the earliest while keeping long-term sustainability in mind.
