Imphal, November 30 2018:
Defending the arrest of Keshorchandra Wangkhem under NSA, BJP Manipur State Unit has urged the Congress party not to create a big scene out of the issue.
Speaking to media persons at the temporary party office at Canchipur today, its spokesperson Chongtham Bijoy condemned the attempt to turn the arrest of Keshorchandra into a big issue by the Congress party and its MLA Kh Joykisan.
He claimed that Keshorchandra was arrested under the NSA not for a single crime and explained that he is an individual who had been remanded in judicial custody in the past.
Instead of performing the responsibilities of an Opposition party, the Congress is barking up the wrong tree which is not good, he claimed.
Explaining that NSA was introduced in the country by then Prime Minister (late) Indira Gandhi in 1980, Bijoy claimed that inconvenience at arresting an individual repeatedly for a single case and threat to the security of the Nation and the social harmony can result in NSA being enforced.
Since 2017, Keshorchandra is the 10th individual who has been arrested under NSA.
All those before him were hard-core underground extremists.
He was arrested because of making various posts on social media which were antisocial and communal, Bijoy claimed.
Bijoy enlightened all that elected MPs and MLAs who are elected and tasked with saving democracy are addressed with the term 'Honourable' before their names and this single act is a sign of respect for democracy.
The spokesperson continued that Keshorchandra challenged democracy and the Government.
He was arrested under NSA to protect peace and social harmony of the State, Bijoy added.
Clarifying on the charges and allegations hurled against the State Government by MLA Joykisan, the spokesperson conveyed that a person arrested under NSA will be judged by the NSA Board and an MLA has no authority to do so.
There is a boundary to the so called freedom of speech.
There will not be a single Government which can let go an individual who will challenge or will be a threat to the security of the State or region.
If such individuals are not kept in check, there is no need for a Government to exist, the spokesperson explained.
