Imphal, May 29 2019:
Volunteers of Joint Students' Coordinating Committee (JSCC) have seized nicotine and tobacco products from 6 shops and vendors located within 100 metres radius of GP Women College and TG Higher Secondary and later disposed by burning.
Speaking to media persons, JSCC's convenor, Manjit Sarangthem said that tobacco products were also seized from the nearby shops of Manipur College too on May 20.The student body had warned the shop owners to permanently shut their shops if found selling intoxicants again, he said.
Saying that the drive will continue, the convenor pointed out that selling of nicotine or tobacco products within 100m radius of educational institution is punishable by law.
Though there are laws that prohibit selling of such items in the surrounding areas of schools and colleges, negligence of the authority concerned to enforce the laws has ruined lives of many students, he said.
He then added that the JSCC will conduct many academic activities and awareness programmes to enlighten students about harmful effect of tobacco and its products.
