Imphal, August 26 2013:
Spreading the message to stop all forms of violence against women and engross in bringing development by enhancing resources, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMWOVA) has kick started its street comer meeting and wall poster campaign from Kwakeithel Bazar today.
AMWOVA President Y Kunjarani said that cases of rape, rape and murder, domestic violence, staged suicide, forcing women to kill herself, attempted rape, woman and girl trafficking, setting ablaze to death and kidnapping are frequently happening in Manipur.
She said that such cases annihilate women's strength and resources which in turn give serious impact to the economy and development of the State.
AMWOVA initiated the street comer meeting and wall poster campaign as part of the awareness campaign and protest rally held on March 8 this year, she added.
On the first day of the campaign, AMWOVA volunteers pasted wall posters and distributed pamphlets at Kwakeithel Bazar.
Kunjarani said that similar programmes would be held at different localities of Bishnupur, Thoubal and Imphal East districts as well.
The posters and pamphlets appealed to the general public to stop violence against women, support victims, punish culprits, remember the contributions of Manipuri women and not to indulge in immoral behaviour and wear proper dresses etc.
According to media re-ports, Kunjarani said, 10 women were raped in Manipur till June this year.
During this period, two women were murdered after rape, 10 women died in suspicious manner and 10 other were murdered, she said.
Kunjarani further said that the same period also witnessed abduction of five women and mysterious disappearance of eight women.
Saying that these were only media reported cases, Kunjarani added that there must be many unreported cases as well.
Informing that an LLB student and a mother of four from Tera Khongshangbi succumbed to her bum injuries in the hospital on August 16, Kunjarani said that a woman died under mysterious circumstances at Jiribam a few days back.
However, culprits walked free in most cases as police have failed to properly investigate into the cases and file chargesheets against them, she said.
Kunjarani opined that people often resorted to mob justice due to loss of faith from law enforcing agencies.
She also pointed out that frequent occurrence of violence against women also weaken the campaigns against human rights violation, AFSPA and movements of preserving natural resources etc.
