Imphal, September 22 2021:
Keishamthong AC MLA and ex-minister Langpoklakpam Jayantakumar has predicted that no political party will be able to win absolute majority in the upcoming 12th State Legislative Assembly elections in 2022, while adding that the government would probably be a coalition, formed by a post-poll alliance.
The MLA was responding to questions posed by reporters during a distribution function of labour cards to beneficiaries of Keishamthong AC, held at his Pishumthong residence on Wednesday afternoon.
He recounted that state NPP leaders along with national president Conrad Sangma met CM N Biren.
During the meeting held at the CM's bungalow in the presence of BJP national secretary BL Santosh during latters recent visit to the state no pre-poll alliance was discussed.
As such, for any alliance, the decision would be taken through NEDA or other forum after the polls, he observed.
"It is impossible for any political party to attain absolute majority in the upcoming polls, although all political parties come forward to contest the polls with this notion.
However, the people are the decision-makers," the MLA said, while expressing belief that the new government would be a coalition government.
Jayantakumar then informed that NPP plans to field 30-35 candidates in the upcoming polls but the decision is not final as there is still time before the elections/Additionally, the number of candidates is not fixed.
At present, almost every constituency will be seeing 2-3 candidates vying for BJP tickets.
If they fail to get the tickets, they will likely turn their attention to other parties like INC, NPP or NPF.
Thus, NPP will welcome potential candidates and as such, the number of contesting candidates could increase, he said.
During Wednesday's function, the MLA urged the beneficiaries to renew the labour cards from time to time.
The function was also attended by Ward No 12 corporator P Premila.
