Imphal, January 11 2022:
All Manipur Nupi Marup has strongly condemned the extension of disturbed area status in the state for one year in-spite of chief minister N Biren frequently claiming that law and order situation has improved.
In a release, Marup secretary L Sumatibala pointed out that several political parties, CSOs, columnists and intellectuals have renewed their call for repealing the anachronistic Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in the wake of the recent killing of innocent civilians by Indian Army at Oting village in Mon district of Nagaland on December 4 .
The Nagaland Assembly had also unanimously adopted a resolution for repealing AFSPA.
In Manipur also various organisations have been demanding its withdrawal for the last many years.
Even the chief minister made a public statements that he is working for repeal of AFSPA from the state, it added.
The body also mentioned that it is very suspicious that there has been no reason provided for the absence of state's chief minister in the recently conducted core committee meeting called by Union home minister Amit Shah for repealing of AFSPA which was attended by Assam and Nagaland's chief ministers.
BJP has been claiming that during its rule the law-and-order situation in the state has improved much compared to the rule of previous Congress government.
Hence, it must explain to the public why the disturbed areas status has been extended in the state for one more year, it demanded.
The release further said that the disturbed area status in Nagaland was extended for six months only, but why the same status was extended for one year in the state, despite the state government claiming that law and order situation has become better in state.
