Maternal death rate declining in State: Prof Sekharjit

Imphal, March 29, 2014:
The rate of maternal death during childbirth at both RIMS and JNIMS has declined considerably, Director of RIMS Prof S Sekharjit has stated during the 9th Annual Conference of the Imphal Obstetrics and Gynecological Society 2014 which kick-started from today at the RIMS Jubilee Hall here.
The 3-day long event is being organised under the theme of "Prevention of Maternal Death".
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sekharjit went on to point out that only 60-70 maternal deaths were recorded against 1 lakh child deliveries in the two hospitals since 2009. He urged the medical doctors concerned to keep in mind the importance of the conference's theme and understand the need for awareness among women and children as well on the prevention of maternal death.
Prof Sekharjit also emphasized on the importance of seeking routine and proper medical treatment and checkups by women from early stage of pregnancy till the time of delivery of the child and beyond.
Dr DN Kheroda, former Director of Health, Government of Manipur, who also attended the opening function of the conference, mentioned that one child is born in every 12 minutes in India.
She said cases of maternal death during delivery are also recorded and called for taking maximum care while delivering child.
Barun Mitra, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister; Prof N Sarat Kumar from Government Medical College, Agartala, Tripura; Prof L Ranjit and Dr Ch Pritamkumar, organising secretaries of the event, Prof N Nabakishore, organizing chairman were also among others who attended the function.
