Imphal, May 28 2023:
United Chongthas has expressed shock over the remark made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 25 at Guwahati that the ethnic conflict in Manipur was caused by misunderstanding arising from an order issued by the High Court of Manipur.
In a release, United Chongthas claimed that the ethnic conflict began on May 3 at the end of the Tribal Solidarity March organised by ATSUM when the participants carried out various acts of violence.
It claimed that the rally was not staged against the demand for ST status but against Chief Minister N Biren Singh's War on Drugs mission.
"The rallyist shouted various derogatory slogans against N Biren Singh when it is clear that the CM did not neither openly support nor opposed the ST demand raised by the Meetei community", it added.
"It was unfortunate that a highly respectable Union Home Minister would say that the conflict began because of an understanding regarding the ST demand", said United Chongthas while appealing to the Union Minister to clarify on the matter during his proposed visit to Manipur.
United Chongthas further appealed to the Union Home Minister to conduct due diligence about the root cause of the ethnic conflict and take necessary action to restore peace & normalcy in Manipur.
