Imphal, March 28 2023:
Maintaining that location for the temporary shelter home for illegal immigrants from Myanmar to be set up by the state government is in Menkang village and not in Haolenphai as stated by the government authorities, Menkang (Mankang) Village Authority chief N Laban Moyon has drawn attention of the chief minister to make necessary clarification and amendment.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, Laban Moyon said that the village authority welcomes the state government's decision to provide temporary shelter to the immigrants from Myanmar, who believe would be safer in Manipur.
However, the location belongs to Menkang village and not Haolenphai village as claimed by the government, he reiterated.
While informing that Mankang Khunthak is in the state gazette with village code 270730 under Moreh block of Tengnoupal sub-division, the chief said Haolenphai is a village yet to be granted recognition by the government.
While questioning the rationale for using an unrecognised village name in place of the recognised village Mankang Khunthak by the SDO concerned, Laban Moyon urged the chief minister to look into the matter and make necessary amendment in the government order to tag Mankang Khunthak instead of Haolenphai.
He also reminded the government on its recent stand against new and un-recognised village settlement.
Meanwhile, an official team led by additional deputy commissioner (ADC), Moreh L Bobi Singh along with Haolenphai village chief Lalkhol un Haokip on Tuesday carried out geo-tagging exercise for setting up refugees' shelter home to accommodate the refugees from Myanmar.
Speaking in this regard, chief Lalkholun informed that jungle cutting has been initiated for setting up the shelter home following instruction by Tribal Affairs Hills, Horticulture & Soil Conservation minister Letpao Haokip during the recent visit by the ministerial team in the area.
The village chief urged the government to take up all necessary initiatives at the earliest.
