Minister Biswajit pitches for planting more trees

Planting more trees to increase forest cover is the most important means to fight climate change, which is becoming an alarming crisis in the state at present, said forest, environment and climate change minister Th Biswajit.
Central Forest Division of the forest department organised a tree plantation programme at Nongmaiching Reserved Forest along with a discussion session with residents of nearby villages on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Biswajit explained about the negative impact of deforestation and the crisis-situation arising out of climate change.
For the past several years, the.
state has been witnessing erratic rainfall pattern and has been losing forest cover every year.
In such a situation, planting more trees to restore forest areas of the state is the only viable option to restore the climatic condition, he said.
Informing about the government's policy to provide alternative source of income to discourage poppy plantation and deforestation, the minister called for public support in the initiative.
He also informed that the government is planning to plant 75 lakh tree saplings in every district during the current year as part of celebrating country's 75 years of independence.
Lamlai MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha and Kshetrigao MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan also attended the programme.
