Kamjong villagers hail road project, seek trade centre

As the 37-km long road from Kamjong to Konkhan Thana close to the Indo-Myanmar border has been developed with black-topping, residents of villages located along the road have thanked the state and central governments for improving the road condition while expressing the need for a trade centre in order to improve their socio-economic con ditions too.
A media team along with PWD engineers and officials of Bhartia Infra Project Limited (BIPL), the construction company assigned the road development project, paid an inspection visit on Saturday to assess progress of the road project.
Local residents settling along the road could be seen in a jubilant mood on seeing all-weather road reaching the remote part of the state, perhaps for the first time.
BIPL site engineer Laimayum Nabakishwar Sharma told media persons that hill cutting, GSB and WBM works have been completed and blacktopping work is going on.
They are planning to complete the road project by February 16 next year and are confident that they can meet the deadline considering the current progress.
Grihang village headman S Daniel Sadang said that the road was cut during the 2nd World War and it remained in a very bad condition since then.
Except for Shaktiman truck, no other vehicle could operate on the road.
As a result, the local residents face severe hardships, especially during medical emergency.
Expressing gratitude to the central and state governments and BIPL for executing the road project, he also thanked Ram Muivah, the former secretary of North Eastern Council, for sanctioning the project during his tenure.
The villagers are confident that the company will maintains proper quality and the road will last for a long period, he further stated and conveyed that all residents of villages along the road such as Kamjong, Bungpa Khunnou, Kampa Khullen, Phaikok, and Ningchou are happy.
They are hoping that the government would set up a trade centre in the area so that the residents could improve their socio-economic condition as well, the village headman said.
According to Ningchou village secretary W Jajo the road has improved the standard of living of the people in the area and they are happy with the quality of the work.
Earlier, apex body of the villages had approached local MLAs on multiple occasions to improve the road connectivity but it is the first time they are seeing a blacktopped road in their locality.
Earlier, MLAs only laid shingles to make it somewhat usable during rainy season, Jajo said.
