MCPCR takes up suo moto case

The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken up a suo moto case in connection with the death of Ningthoujam Babysana, apart from directing the SP of Imphal West to investigate the incident and submit a status report at the earliest.
A press release issued by the Chairperson of the Commission stated that the Commission also directed the District Child Protection Officer, Imphal West, to conduct a field investigation and submit a status report to the Commission.
It continued that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has developed a regulatory guidelines for hostels of educational institutions for children and explained that the guidelines cover all aspects of a child's need in educational hostels.
The Chairpersons informed that a consultation was held at Old Secretariat conference hall on January 28 this year so as to adopt these guidelines in the context of the State and added that after incorporating suggestions from the consultation, the Commission submitted copy of the said guidelines to the Director, Department of Social Welfare, for taking necessary approval from the State Government.
Considering the recent case of Babysana, it is high time for these guidelines to be adopted in Manipur for setting up norms for the schools having residential facilities so as to prevent such incidents in the future, the Chairperson added.
