Imphal, March 23 2023:
Expressing dismay at the court's verdict of sentencing Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to two years' imprisonment in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his alleged 'Modi surname' remark, party workers staged a protest demonstration in front of Congress Bhawan, here, on Thursday.
Speaking on the side-lines of the demonstration, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president N Bhupenda contended that the Surat District Court's verdict of convicting Rahul Gandhi is an act to divert the Adani Hindenburg case.
He further said that the judgment of the Surat Court will be challenged in a higher court.
The Congress committee will support all the activities of Rahul Gandhi for the welfare and development of the country.
Meanwhile, to a query raised by reporters, N Bhupenda said that the case of siphoning of rice provided under NFSA is very unfortunate and the case should be handed over to CBI.
Mention may be made that a Surat court on Thursday held Rahul Gandhi guilty in a 2019 defamation case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment.
The court approved his bail and stayed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal.
