Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day was observed by the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur at Mini Conference Hall, JNIMS, Porompat.
The observance was graced by Health Minister D Korungthang, Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare PK Singh, Director of Health Services & Mission Director (NHM) Dr O Ibomcha Singh, Director of Family Welfare Services Dr K Rajo Singh and Director of JNIMS Dr Deben Laishram as presidium members.
Speaking at the programme.
Minister D Korungthang said that iodine plays a significant role in the physical and mental development of humans.
Iodine deficiency in pregnant mothers can severely affect unborn children's brain development.
"There are over 1,20,000 people suffering from iodine deficiency disorder in India.
Though India has been observing Global IDD Prevention Day since 1998, it is important for the general public to avail the benefits provided by the Government and contribute in building a healthy society," Minister D Korungthang said.
