Imphal, December 18 2014:
While sharing the grief of the bereaved families, the Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) vehemently deplored the ordeal of traditional water emersion judgement (Dui Kei-Maidenghmei) on the dispute over share of land and the Khullakpaship of Gahtao (Satu) village of Khoupum Sub-Division in Tamenglong district on December 12 last.
Singlanglung Gangmei, S/o Late Khoiruilung Gangmei and Kalanjin Gangmei alias Kadeikhao Gangmei, S/o Late Gaimakulungpou of Gahtao (Satu) village of Khoupum Sub-Division, Tamenglong district lost their lives in the incident.
A statement of ZB (AMN) said that series of hearings had been carried out in the office of Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong district on the said dispute, but they failed to deliver justice.
Finally, the traditional method of trial known as traditional water emersion judgement for justice was adopted, leading to the demise of the duo.
The Tamenglong District and the Sub-Divisional Magistrates with police man-power including many village authorities of the Khoupum areas glorified the old time/outdated system of trial for justice, the statement alleged.
Saying this is very unbecoming on the part of the modern day judiciary system that the said method of the judgement in the past should have been abandoned, the ZB (AMN) demanded booking of the District Administrator of Tamenglong, who ordered the water ordeal judgement for justice.
