Imphal, June 18 2021:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) has drawn the attention of the state government and urged to declare the observance of the Great June Uprising Unity Day as general holiday and observe the same as a state function.
In a release, MPP vice president Dr S Ibomcha stated that AMUCO and UCM have been observing the June 18 uprising annually at the martyrs' memorial site located at Kekrupat.
MPP too joined the observance every year.
The state government is paying respect to Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Paona Brajabashi, Rani Gaidinliu, Haipou Jadonang and Hijam Irabot for their supreme sacrifices for the cause of safeguarding Manipur's independence, Dr Ibomcha pointed out, while reiterating the appeal for declaring June 18 as a state holiday and observing it as a state function to pay respect to the martyrs.
He recounted that on June 18, 2001, people of Manipur rose against the ploy of the then BJP-led Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and the Naga rebel group NSCN-IM to disintegrate Manipur, and sacrificed their lives for protecting territorial integrity of the state.
