Imphal, May 18 2014 :
In unison with rest of the international museum community, Art & Culture Department, Government of Manipur celebrated the International Museum Day 2014 on Monday.
The celebration was held at Manipur State Museum complex here.
The theme of this year's edition of International Museum Day was "Museum Collections Make Connections" .
A tribal textile gallery was also opened at the State Museum to mark the occasion.
International Museum Day is celebrated across the globe on May 18 each year.
This year's edition was the 37th celebration of the day in a row.
RK Nimai, Commissioner, Art & Culture, who attended the celebration as chief guest, said that museum helps in creating bonds among diverse ethnic communities in the State and contributes towards the efforts of scaling down hatred among these groups.
Museum plays a key role in diffusing tensions among these various groups, he insisted.
Nimai explained that all the existing different cultures in Manipur have similar features, barring the traditional musical instruments.
The Commissioner said his department has been working hard to protect and preserve all these analogous cultural heritages and identities of the different groups.
Emphasizing on the need for young students to understand the importance of museum, Nimai suggested that school teachers should allow the students to visit museum instead of mere demonstration in class room.
Dr K Sobita, Director of Art & Culture was among others who were present during the celebration.
