Thoubal, August 16 2021:
Opposition member and MPCC vice-president Keisham Meghachandra has held the BJP government accountable for alleged security lapses in the hill areas.
Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of a tree plantation programme held at Charangpat Mamang Leikai, the Congress MLA from Wangkhem assembly constituency said that the violent incident that took place at Japhou bazar in Chandel district HQ on August 14 was an unfortunate incident that undermined the security of the state.
The BJP regime, as a responsible government, should take up stringent measures to prevent such incidents arising out of security lapses in hill areas of the state in future, he said.
The incident might be the first in the country where the government security forces were completely undermined and it exposed the state home department's ineffectiveness in hill areas.
Police personnel not being able to do anything even when violent protesters burned down police booth in front of them is a proof of lawlessness, he said while demanding necessary measures to address the issue.
After seeing the Japhou Bazar incident, one could simply imagine the condition of national highways, where lives of the public are not secured.
Reports of unauthorised tax collection or extortion activities being carried out openly at Mao gate, Noney and other areas along the national highways are becoming true and as such it is high time to deploy highway protection force along the highways, he added.
Regarding the disqualification case of MLAs in connection with the petition over appointment of parliamentary secretaries, Meghachandra said that upholding the provisions laid down by the Constitution is of prime importance for any lawmaker.
Unfortunately, lawmakers in the state are going against the Constitution and the government is also supporting the same.
Everybody saw how the Governor allowed violation of Constitution right under her nose by allowing an MLA from the opposition party to take oath as minister without tendering resignation paper from his parent party.
The anti-defection law enshrined in the Constitution of India is being violated down the years in the state, he said while expressing that the Supreme Court will definitely deliver the right verdict in the disqualification case of parliamentary secretaries.
