Imphal, March 15 2023:
Demanding implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and setting up of population commission in the state for protecting the indigenes, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) organised rally at MU on Wednesday.
Before taking out the rally, students of the varsity led by MUSU president Thokchom Sonamani gathered at the Traffic Island and shouted slogans like 'Save indigenous people from influx', 'Identify and deport illegal immigrants', 'Implement NRC' and 'Set up population commission' among others.
The rally was taken out till the varsity main gate, where the students again raised various slogans.
Speaking in this regard, Sonamani pointed out that there has been unprecedented increase in influx of illegal immigrants into the state and settlement of outsiders in hilly areas.
Moreover, some of the infiltrators are indulging in destruction of reserved and protected forests apart from involvement in poppy cultivation, thereby causing tremendous impact on the natural environment, he claimed.
Demanding the government to set a population commission and implement NRC in the state, he urged the CM and the central government to look into the matter and take up necessary initiatives for protecting the indigenous people of Manipur.
The rally has been staged as a wake-up call to the people.
Similar demonstrations including sit-ins will also be organised, he added.
