Imphal, December 10 2017:
The Women Action for Developent has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 and to set up credible commission of inquiry to investigate crimes against women in Manipur .
The submission of memorandum is also a part of the International Human Rights Day commemoration which fell today .
Today, around 2000 volunteers of the women’s group made a symbolic gesture by gathering at Moirang while denouncing the suspension of the democratic rights of Manipuris with the imposition of Acts like the Armed Force Special Powers Act .
The memorandum mentioned that empirical evidence shows that the armed forces and the police have been systematically committing grave sexual violence on women and extrajudicial execution of thousands of civilians .
As an organisation working for the rights of women and children, the Women Action for Development has been actively monitoring the rising crime against women in the State for the past few decades .
The WAD has been actively campaigning against acts of violence being committed against women of the State.
They work for the future of the Manipuri society where one half of the population is increasingly waging an unequal war against the other half, that is women, by beating them, raping them, and killing them both at home and outside, it added.
